How Old Are Your Tires? | Berryhill Auto Care
If your tires are old, it may be time to get new ones. The Berryhill auto care tire technicians at Same Day can help you with that.
While you were driving home yesterday, you hit an especially rough stretch of road. So, when you got home, you looked at your tires to see if they suffered any damage from the road bumps and dips.
Your tires looked fine. Not only had they not suffered from the rough roads, they looked in good condition despite the fact you’ve had them for awhile. You’re actually kind of relieved that it doesn’t look as if you’ll be needing new tires anytime soon.
Not so fast. Even though your tires look good, they may not be in great condition. It all has to do with how old your tires are.
Safercar.gov, which is produced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, explains:
“The structural integrity of a tire can degrade over an extended period of time. When that occurs, tires are more prone to catastrophic failure, which could, at best, cause an inconvenience, or, at worst, lead to a crash. The degradation of a tire occurs over time, mostly the result of a chemical reaction within the rubber components. That aging process can be accelerated by heat and sunlight.”
The difficulty is that there may be no obvious signs that aging is taking a toll on your tire worthiness and threatening your safety.
“The effects of aging may not be visibly detectable,” safercar.org says. “Since there is no standard test to assess the serviceability of a tire, even an inspection performed by an expert may not always reveal the extent of tire deterioration. Vehicle owners are therefore encouraged to have their tires checked after five years of use, then annually thereafter.”
The best thing for most drivers to do is to have their tires checked by a certified Berryhill auto care and tire specialist like the ones found at Same Day Auto Repair.
